Everything is Love.
Just in time for Valentine’s day… Sharing ten movies and more that will give you all the warm fuzzies, and make you either scream in delight or cry your eyes out because watching them has you thinking of your non-existent love life. Enjoy!
Disclaimer: it’s not a list of our best romantic movies.
1. To all the boys I have loved before
Bukunmi: This is probably the cutest movie I have ever watched.
Bukayo: Cutest movie ever! I love teenage romance. I imagine this is the type of love I hoped for at 13. If I were to write a letter to all the boys I’ve loved before though, I suspect it would have a lot of unprintable words.
Back to the movie. It’s not cheesy like the typical teen movie. I take that back; this movie is cheesy AF. But it’s good quality, super-aged cheese.
Bukunmi: It was a cute movie, and it just reminded me about innocent crushes… if only love were that simple. Oh yes, the music was terrific as well.
Bukayo: I have watched it 3 times already, and I’m not sorry!
2. Bridget Jone’s Diary
Bukunmi: I found this movie really cute and honest. She wants to loose weight and find true love. #Icanrelate. lmao
Bukayo: I don’t understand how you don’t want to put the Notebook, but you want to put this movie, please make sure you put it down that I do not agree.
Bukayo and I went back and forth for a while, she wanted to include Diary of Mad Black Woman, and it was at this point I knew Bukayo truly had no idea what true romance feels like!
3. The best Man
Bukayo: Do you like the best man?
Bukunmi: I like it, but I am not going to watch it on valentines day, if I am trying to watch a good movie with bae, not sure its a good movie to watch.
Bukayo: To be fair, I think the Best Man 2, made me like it even more. It has a bit of a sad ending though.
4. One Day
Bukayo: I can vouch for this movie with my entire life
Bukunmi: I agree, one of my best movies, but the ending was really sad which I liked.
Bukayo: Yeah its always makes my list of top 3 movies across all genres.
Bukunmi: Would you want to watch it with Bae on Valentines day though?
Bukayo: Yes! Love is tragic… First time I watched it, I started crying from halfway through the movie all the way to the end.
Bukunmi: Well I am not trying to know that on Valentines day am I?
Bukayo: LOVE IS A TRAGEDY
See why I said Bukayo was maybe the wrong person to have this discussion with.
Bukayo: Can I add my favourite quote?
Bukayo’s favourite quote: “I love you Dexter, so much. I just don’t like you anymore.”
5. Love and Basketball
Bukunmi: Now this is the ultimate romantic movie!
Bukayo: It should have been our number 1. Do you know what I remember?
Bukunmi: lol please I do not know oooo….Do you remember how old you were when you first watched this movie?
Bukayo: No. But I was probably in ACO (secondary school) though. It helped set my unrealistic expectations of love.
Bukunmi: Pretty sure, I was not old enough, because it’s a tremendously physical movie, and I don’t want to go in and talk about how deep the movie was beyond the whole love thing but it also touched on what kind of people the two leads wanted to be in life, and was also not too cliche, because sometimes love is hard and its not really a fairytale.
Bukayo: haha. The love making scene is PG enough. This woman’s work was the perfect song for the scene as well. I’m going to listen to it after this.
Bukayo’s favourite quote(s):
“Double or nothing.” … If you know, you know.
“All’s fair in love and basketball.”
6. Love Jones
Bukunmi: This is a given for me.
Bukayo: Yeah not so much for me.
Bukunmi: Again, I don’t want to go too deep but it is a beautifully written black romance. It’s not a typical Cinderella love story with a knight in shining armor. In the story, female and male characters can stand on their own as they manage their lives and careers. They understand themselves but are still trying to figure out how they fit in each other’s lives. The movie did not end with the filmmaker telling us they had a “happily ever after” but asking the question: can they make their relationship work. Also a young Larenz Tate?
Bukunmi’s favourite quote:
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHIN’. THIS HERE, RIGHT NOW, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, IS ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME. I LOVE YOU. THAT’S URGENT LIKE A MOTHERF**KER.’ — DARIUS LOVEHALL
7. Dear John
Bukayo: Bukunmi I love you, I love you, I love you.
Bukunmi: Back when Channing Tatum still did it for me. You can always count on Nichola Sparks to give you the ultimate cliche white love story.
Bukayo: White love story? Lmao. But yeah, I love Nicholas Sparks. It doesn’t get better than this movie really. The characters are a bit cliche, tough guy, good girl, but the twist and turns of this love story are not cliche, makes it a good watch.
Bukayo’s favourite quote:
“After I got shot… Do you want to know the very last thing that entered my mind? You.”
Bukayo suggested we put Nigerian movies, but I cannot think of anyone, so please let us know if you have any one.
Bukunmi: tbh, If I am going to watch a movie on valentines day, this will probably be my first choice.
Bukayo: I probably should too. I haven’t watched it in so long, I barely remember it. Will Smith is a love doctor who falls in love with Eva Mendez. There’s a dramatic scene at the end where he’s chasing her car right? I’m not sure it should be on the list.
Bukunmi: You should be sure, the movie was funny, it was cute and it had Will smith in it, so why are you not sure?
I think I have mentioned that Will smith is my second father, so I did not really appreciate Bukayo talking nonsense.
Bukayo loves Will Smith too. *rolls eyes* Omd. Idea! Can we do top 10 Will Smith movies if you let me come back? I really think I’ve watched all his movies. Please!
9. 10 Things I Hate About You
Bukayo: This is the movie. It really is.
Bukunmi: The ultimate teen movie of all teen movies! Did you know it’s based on a shakespare story?
Bukayo: Really? I had no idea.
Bukunmi : This scene reminds me of when we were much younger and you use hate to cover up how much you really like somebody. lol
Bukayo: That’s my favourite quote up there. The entire poem is so dreamy. And the emotion with which she read it, everything! Love really is tragic.
10. DHOOM 2!
Bukunmi: We go way back with this movie. DHOOM MA CHALE…….
Bukayo: Actually one of the first Indian movies I ever watched. I’m not a fan of Bollywood, but this was a really good movie!
Bukunmi: Pros of this movie and why you should see it
1. Noteworthy songs, partly in English with a lot of hip-hop vibe and attitude
2. Good looking actors and actresses…a dose of Dhoom 2 might make you reconsider eating another burger
3. Big name actors plus above average performances
4. Action plus comedy plus romance plus adventure all rolled up in one movie. Funnyman Uday steals the show with all his pranks. I found myself cracking up in every scene he’s in.
5. Exotic locations plus really beautiful colors.
Bukayo: I agree with all your pros. If I close my eyes and focus, I can hear Hrithik Roshan whistling the theme song, and giving us some Michael Jackson meets Shakira dance moves. (If you’ve seen the movie, you know this scene)
11. Just Wright
Bukunmi: We were only going to talk about 10, but then we remembered this beautiful movie. I was smiling all through this movie, you know. tbh I think I have a soft spot for black romantic movies, and a softer spot for Common lol.
Bukayo: I have a soft spot too. It probably has to do with relatability. Also, I love Queen Latifah and Common. They’re both amazing actors and rappers, and just super cool.
Bukayos favourite quote:
“I know you. I know you love me. I know those feelings didn’t conveniently fade away because you’re mad at me.”
- Love and other Drugs
- Crazy stupid love
- Pretty woman
- Dirty dancing
- Pride and prejudice
- Love Actually (Bukayo hates this movie)
- Fault in our stars (Bukayo absolutely loves this movie)
- Me before you
- Crazy Rich Asians.
- Brown Sugar
Bukayo says “Gone Girl” should be included as an honourable mention. For men (or women) who are misbehaving out there, today might be the day your partner decides to draw inspiration from this movie. Be guided!
